I am a teacher from the states and have been living and teaching in South Korea for the last year and was offered a teaching position at a private language school in Ankara, which I am thinking very seriously about taking and would love your take on living in Turkey and any other suggestions you might have. I would be arriving sometime in March of 2011. I look forward to hearing from you. e_wilder@hotmail.com
Thanks~Gypsy Blood~https://www.blogger.com/profile/08629858565454087412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-45860305085829999192010-10-15T19:00:42.744+03:002010-10-15T19:00:42.744+03:00Hello there! I've a degree in chemistry but interested in TEFL certification. I understand that you teach in Turkey. Was it:

difficult to find work?
difficult to get a contract where you don't have to leave the country every 3 months?

When does the school year start and finish?

Did you have an education background prior to finding work?

Did you have any additional certifications: CELTA, DELTA etc?

I think that is all I have for now... sorry for all the questions! I do get shouted at a lot though. Once I brought my husband and it was s peaceful and quiet. They shout less at women with children or accompanied by men. They shout "Abla" of course and "Mavish Efendi" (Miss Blueish) I find I stick out at the pazar because of my coloring. It is not that there are not Turkish people with light hair, or blue eyes or fair skin. It is just that they do not usually see ALL three together and thrown in with freckles. I try to blend in by speaking Turkish and with my clothes, but I can't see to manage it.Juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06223847633625286061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-39330877941291213412010-10-14T09:40:28.778+03:002010-10-14T09:40:28.778+03:00I am a big farmer's market fan as well. The apple seller was a nice guy but he started getting on my nerves with his single (and LOUD) oft-repeated English sentence. Everytime he'd boom "HOWAR YOU!!Fine thanks and YOU!!" Everybody withing 20 feet of me would suddenly turn and glare. I'd feel like a fleeing spy caught in the spotlight.
Still, I like the social atmosphere and the bustle. Well, at least an hour of it.. if it isn't past 2 in the afternoon, which appears to be the hour after which nobody can walk straight or decide anything quickly.
Funny how just being polite (saying "thanks" and "please" and smiling!) gets you noticed. It has NOT, however, gotten me any discounts on my lemons, to date.Nomadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03686282358562565742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-4786616840915312512010-10-14T02:08:28.037+03:002010-10-14T02:08:28.037+03:00Dang... that does sound stressful. I'm planning on moving to Turkey in 2 months to be with my boyfriend. We'll be near Kusadasi. I'm from MA, so this will be quite the move and I love hearing about your experiences! You also make me laugh out loud with your writing sometimes, which is great. My family is a little freaked out by the idea of my move and sometimes their fear spreads back to me. Thanks for reminding me of the things that I love about Turkey and making me even more excited for my move!
CarolineCaroline Yakarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16546656075880758884noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-73591934442602651742010-08-20T20:10:06.021+03:002010-08-20T20:10:06.021+03:00These are gorgeous, wish I could have been there! ...These are gorgeous, wish I could have been there! xoxoxoxoxittakesavillagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13533378814873819033noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-72560632426561412242010-08-20T19:10:03.079+03:002010-08-20T19:10:03.079+03:00Gosh, a little word like "not" can make ...Gosh, a little word like "not" can make such a difference. Yes, sorry. I could NOT see your pictures.

I can only speak for my PC. Your pics do not seem to appear. Just blank squares with tiny icons in the center and the names of the pics at the top of the square. The second commenter (myankara) seems to have been able to see them. I used Chrome but also checked with Firefox and it's the same problem.
I hate having to use the crappy default post editor that comes with Blogger. It is always an unhappy experience but at least the pictures show up.
I myself have a choice of reposting ALL my pictures, going back some two years, if I want anybody inside Turkey to be able to see them. I have been having all kinds of problems with my pictures appearing on my blog- but only when viewed from Turkey!! And only if I use Windows Live Writer to post with. (Aside from this major problem, it is a wonderful blogging tool.)
Apparently the Turkish government has accidentally included Picasa Web albums-(where blogger stores your blog pics) on its banned site list. I believe I know that the problem is but getting any solutions seems too far a stretch for the "modern" customer service facilities on the web. Anyway, I thought you might want this bit of feedback.Nomadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03686282358562565742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-30233722385033933542010-08-01T17:15:24.146+03:002010-08-01T17:15:24.146+03:00Thanks so much! Thanks so much!Juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06223847633625286061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3180791764879730555.post-76157795385514461962010-08-01T00:58:25.305+03:002010-08-01T00:58:25.305+03:00Congrats!
